Unlocking the Doors of Your Heart

8/31/2020

“You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your craftsmanship is marvelous—how well I know it…You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.”  - Psalm 139:13-16 (NLT)

This short passage within Psalm 139, penned by the psalmist David, paints such a vivid picture of God as our very Personal Creator, who had infinite knowledge of how we would be uniquely formed along with the details of our lives before even one day of our existence came into being. God knows us beyond the capacity that anyone else in all the world could know us, yet there are areas of our lives which we have not allowed Him complete access for various reasons. For some of us, it is a level of mistrust in the very character of The One we call our Creator, our Lord, and our Savior. In most cases, life’s journey may have involved events for which we have no explanation for how our God who we know the Bible says is ‘always good,’ could allow such evil, tragedy, pain, or suffering to enter into our lives. Therefore, we may further struggle beyond mistrust of Him, and seek control over those most vulnerable areas of our hearts by building fortified doors which may have remained locked for years as a means to suppress the sting of pain and scars from long ago.

However, we are never promised anywhere in scripture that trials, pain, hardship, tragedy, sickness, or suffering will not touch our lives. In fact, Jesus told his disciples, “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33 – NLT) Jesus has overcome the things of the world, even the most evil, painful, tragic, heinous things we could ever imagine. The reality for some is that their life’s journey has encountered such events causing them to lock the doors to certain areas of their hearts from The One who can truly deliver, redeem, and heal anything found beyond those stone walls. Jesus must have “total access” into every area of our lives before true healing can begin, allowing us to move forward into a deeper relationship with Him than we’ve ever known. Turning over the keys begins with the process of daily surrender to Him.

Connecting Faith & Life:

Lord Jesus, there are doors of my heart which have remained locked for many years as I’ve struggled to trust you with the most painful details and scars of my life. I realize that I’m now at an important ‘crossroads’ along my faith journey in which I cannot draw nearer to you, nor develop a deeper relationship with you until I turn over the keys to every door in my heart. You, Lord Jesus, are The One who can truly heal me of the things that have caused me to only partially trust you with my whole heart, for my whole life. Help me, Lord, to surrender every area of my life to you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
